Understanding Emergency Lighting

The installation of emergency lighting is crucial in various settings. As per the regulations in the UK, all occupied structures must have emergency lighting in place to guarantee the well-being of its occupants. This blog post by K-Tec Electrical sheds light on the concept of emergency lighting and its functioning.

According to the Fire Precautions Regulations 1997 and BS5266, workplaces are required to have emergency lighting. This regulation mandates building owners to install luminaries and regularly conduct tests to ensure the functionality of their emergency lighting.

Providing Emergency Lighting for an Escape Route

During an emergency evacuation, it is necessary to have at least one light to illuminate the escape route. Furthermore, if the designated escape route is a corridor, it must be kept clear of any obstacles that may impede the evacuation process.

Stairwell Emergency Lighting

In the event of an evacuation, stairwells can present a potential hazard. As a precaution, it is necessary to have at least two emergency lights that cover this particular area.

Open Area Emergency Lighting

For an escape route, it is necessary to have one emergency light in an open area. But, if the open area is less than sixty square metres, emergency lighting may not be necessary. However, it is important to remember that emergency exit doors must still have emergency lighting above them to direct building users.

Different Categories of Emergency Lighting

There are two commonly used forms of emergency lighting: maintained and non-maintained. However, there are various other options available for use in the workplace.

The lights that are kept in good condition are operated in the same manner as the rest of the lights in the building. In the event of a power outage, these lights will continue to function, albeit at a reduced level of brightness.

Typically, lights that are not maintained will be turned off. However, their LED display should indicate that they have been fully charged. In the event of a power outage, a fixture attached to the lights will activate the battery backup.

Additional instances of emergency lighting include combined lights, self-contained lights, and satellite emergency lights.
